You can’t think about Asheville without thinking about beer and Catawba has some of the best!
Asheville is home to a tasting room, opened in 2015 in the South Slope district where a 7-barrel boutique brewhouse turns out an endless variety of Small Batch beers. Asheville’s Biltmore Village has another conveniently located tasting room, Catawba’s third location – and third brewery – opened in early 2017 in the Plaza-Midwood area of Charlotte features a 10-barrel brewhouse, tasting room, and magnificent city views. Catawba completed the purchase of Charleston’s Palmetto Brewing Company – South Carolina’s oldest craft brewery by the end of 2017, and in March of 2021, the company announced the grand opening of its fourth NC location and first brew pub in Wilmington, NC.
Catawba products are found in eco-friendly cans and kegs in five states (NC, SC, TN, AL, GA). The brewery is proud to be recognized as one of the pioneers of North Carolina’s burgeoning craft beer market. Catawba not only produces great beer but has been supportive of the performance art community from the get-go!

Owners Jesse Van Note and Andrew Ross became friends working together at an Asheville brewery many years ago. There was no shortage of beer around them at all times, but they still felt like something was missing in Asheville.
After many bottle shares and late nights, the idea of a craft beer collective came about; The Whale’s goal is to provide unique offerings that aren’t the same beers served at other bars around town. We handpick each selection of world-class craft beer from around the globe while paying special attention to quality and history. Often, we are fortunate to brew collaborative beers with local and regional breweries that are “Whale Exclusives”.
We invite you to come in and enjoy a “White Whale” you have always wanted to try and have never gotten your hands on. Quench your thirst with your favorite ol’ reliable German pilsner or pick a wild card and sip something you have never seen or heard of, but are glad you discovered it at The Whale Craft Beer Collective!
